Finding Reliable Information Resources
  • Effective use of search engines is important, as I discuss in more detail in my second online tutorial.  The Alta Vista search engine is probably the best for professional purposes, but some of the other major search engines are also good.
  • With the explosive growth of the Internet, however, search engines cannot keep up.  It is estimated that less than half of all information on the Internet has ever been catalogued by all the search engines combined.  As a result, it is becoming even more important to use specialized "directories" and "portal" websites to find information about specialized areas of interest.
    • The "Links" area of my own website may be considered a specialized directory for focussing your food- and nutrition-related searching, and it also has links to many other specialized "directories".

The web is more than an information repository.  It also provides valuable opportunities for networking and information sharing with your professional peers.  We will now take a look at some of these opportunities.
