Professional Development and the Internet

The Internet is an unprecedented pool of resources for professional development.  Professional development is facilitated in three main ways through the Internet.

  • The web is called "the information highway" for a good reason.  With the right skills, you can tap into high quality information resources nearly as good as many major research libraries.  Online translation tools can even help you benefit from high quality information that has been published in some of the major languages!  We'll look at one of these translation tools a little later in this tutorial.
  • The second major way in which the Internet can facilitate professional development is through unparalleled opportunities for peer networking and information sharing.
  • Finally, there is a rapid growth now in professional online learning opportunities, eliminating the barriers of geographic distance which many of us have experienced when we live away from metropolitan centres.

Let's take a look now at some of the types of professional information resources on the Internet.
