The Basics of Using a Netscape Web Browser

(Click on the arrow to learn the basics of using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.)(Alternate Page)

Netscape 3 Screen

You have already learned about using the Back button on your web browser when we were learning about links on web pages.  The graphic above shows the purposes of a number of the buttons on a Netscape 3 browser toolbar, as well as the URL and Status bars.  Other versions of Netscape browsers have similar features and functionality.

At the top of the browser there are a number of pulldown menus typical of Windows applications.  Some of the basic functions you may find helpful in these pulldown menus are summarized below:

"File" Menu

  • You can save a web page to your hard disk (or a floppy disk) for later offline viewing by selecting the Save As... option. Graphic images, however, are often separate files imported into a web page, and will not be saved to the disk.

  •
  • You can open saved web pages for later offline viewing by choosing the Open File... option.
"Edit" Menu
  • The familiar Windows Cut, Copy and Paste options are here.
"Go" Menu
  • Lists web pages you have recently visited during the current online session.  You can go back to any page in this document history by clicking on it.
Bookmarks Menu

(Note:  Bookmarks have their own button beside the Location Bar of Netscape 4 browsers.  In Netscape 4, click on this button and select the Edit Bookmarks option instead of the Go to Bookmarks option described below.)

  • Select the Add Bookmark option to mark a web page you may wish to return to at a later date.
  • Select Go to Bookmarks to view your bookmarks, and double-click on a listed item to go to that web page.
Let's move on to some hands-on activities that will familiarize you with the use of a web browser!
